QSA Apprentice Awards 2020

On the evening of March 11th, JGR Training were proud to announce two winners.

Mahima Khan, The National Assembly for Wales, was awarded the Business Sector award and Steve Ralph, Cardiff Student Union, was awarded the Higher Apprentice Award.

At the end of the ceremony, we were delighted to hear that Mahima also won the overall Apprentice of the Year 2020.

Mahima made a positive impact at the National Assembly from the beginning. Mahima fully captures the organisational values of pride and respect, and skillfully balances the personal and professional aspects of her role. During her apprenticeship, Mahima contributed to to the design of the Welsh Youth Parliament Member handbook, took on extra classes to learn Welsh, and supported the 2020 apprentice scheme, speaking of her experiences at a conference during the recruitment process. Mahima has been granted the permission to deliver weekly Culture Awareness sessions to her colleagues and has become a role model for the BAME community, having taken on the responsibility of co-chairing the Assembly’s Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage Equality Network. Her employer describes her as ‘a breath of fresh air’, who brings a refreshing energy to the organisation.

When Steve embarked on his Higher Apprenticeship in 2018, he was Head of Student Voice at Cardiff Student Union. Steve took a holistic approach to the qualification, initially finding the learning very different in comparison to his academic background. Steve was a very fast learner, embracing all the optional units in his course and completed the whole qualification in just seven months. The work he put in was phenomenal, setting himself weekly targets and achieving them whilst running one of the busiest departments in the Student Union. Steve supported four teammates to complete their course in Management simultaneously. Steve was instrumental in lobbying ILM to change their form standards to include gender neutral pronouns which was brought to the attention of the QSA who moved to include gender neutral pronouns in their Learner Application Form. Since completing his Higher Apprenticeship, Steve is now studying for his MBA, and has secured a promotion to CEO of Trinity St Davids’s Student’s Union.
